Tyne and Wear Metro List of Tyne and Wear Metro stations |
Millfield is a suburb, a little to the west of the centre of Sunderland. This station dates from the opening of the Pelaw to Sunderland and South Hylton metro extension in 2002, but stands on the alignment of the former Sunderland to Durham mainline that fell to the Beeching Axe in the 1960s. The Metro station is built on the site of the first Millfield station, south-east of Hylton Road (the former station master's house was demolished to allow the new station to be built), although it was later relocated on the north-west side of Hylton Road; that station closed in 1955, in advance of the line losing its passenger service.
Millfield Metro Station is currently the only station on the Tyne & Wear Metro where some passenger services pass through the station without stopping (all other Metro stations are served by every in-service train which passes it). This will change after 11th December 2011 when the new timetable come in to effect.[1]
